BOMs Away - From the Heart ~Flimsy Alert~

Welcome to the link-up for BOMs Away Mondays!
Where we share what we're doing on a BOM-type project
so they don't stall out in UFO-land!
(Linky at the bottom.)

It was 88 degrees yesterday afternoon when we took this photo. . .

My "From the Heart" BOM quilt top is completed!!
Pattern is from The Quilt Company, designed by Arlene Stamper and Melissa Harris

. . . and now this! We're supposed to get at least 6 inches by suppertime.

It's Snowing!

Colorado weather is always entertaining!!

Truthfully, though, this weather is a Godsend. We've had terrible wildfires in the Rockies for 4 or 5 weeks, now. Six or Seven major fires in Colorado alone, and our skies that are usually technicolor blue have been brown the whole time.

Supposed to be like this:

But it's been like the following photo since late July/early August. There's a mountain RIGHT THERE. Four blocks gets you to the hiking trail!

It's been awful. It keeps your sinuses messed up and angry, and makes you cough every so often, which freaks people out if you're at the store. People with issues like asthma and COPD are having an especially difficult time. Seems like we wear our masks as much for the smoke as for the pandemic.
  :(

The worst part is that all but 2 of those enormous fires have been human-caused. Come on, people!! Get with the program. Drought. Fires. FIRE BAN. Knock it off with your stupid selfishness, and keep your smoking out of the forests and stop ditching patrols so you can sneak in a campfire. And what the heck??? California has also been having terrible, TERRIBLE fires this year, and one of those, forcing many thousands of people to evacuate, was caused by someone setting off pyrotechnics FOR A GENDER-REVEAL PARTY. What the heck??? Those parties seem pretty excessive to begin with, but who in their right mind thinks it's anywhere near an OK idea to set off pyrotechnics in a drought zone that's already besieged with record-breaking fires?? Please, PLEASE use an overabundance of caution in our situation, everyone.

Does anyone else wonder how much longer we humans will be able to breathe on this planet with all the crazy wildfires we have all over the planet burning up so many oxygen-producing trees, and the Amazon being continuously torn down for "development"?

Anyway, I apologize for running late on BOMs Away. We had to make an unplanned emergency road trip up to Nebraska to help Scott's folks.

What's up at your end?

How about you? Has any BOM type work been happening there?
Sure would love to see!

BOMs Away - From the Heart & Beachwalk

Welcome to the link-up for BOMs Away Mondays!
Where we share what we're doing on a BOM-type project
so they don't stall out in UFO-land!
(Linky at the bottom.)

Plugging away this weekend at that old Beachwalk BOM quilt top - I got the sandcastle block all stitched down and trapunto'd. The crabs, with all their fussy legs, actually have a dual layer of trapunto since the first one is so smashed down - so you don't those guys from this side anymore.

And during this week's TV time, I finished one of the vine borders for my From the Heart BOM. The other 3 have all their greenery - just need hearts, after I get the binding on Heather's quilt stitched down.

How is BOM type work going at your place?

BOMs Away: Swans - From the Heart

Welcome to the link-up for BOMs Away Mondays!
Where we share what we're doing on a BOM-type project
so they don't stall out in UFO-land!
(Linky at the bottom.)

The first week of the month is for my Swan Island BOM, so I made two more swans:

I really do love this project! (I don't love trying to get the camera to see the colors properly.)

Also, I realized that I never did share the center of From the Heart when it was assembled in mid-August:

I have the applique border prepped for the hand work, and it's in my applique bag behind the last of the berries for my Dahlia quilt top and Block 6 of my Octopus Garden long-term BOM. It'll be December, at least, before I get to these borders.

~*~*~*~

I hope you had a good week. How are your BOMs going?

BOMs Away Monday

Welcome to the link-up for BOMs Away Mondays!
Where we share what we're doing on a BOM-type project
so they don't stall out in UFO-land!
(Linky at the bottom.)

Wow! It's been quite a long time since I've done any "normal" patchwork piecing.

Putting together the patchwork blocks for my "From the Heart" was kind of fun for a change:

(edited in) Oh! I forgot to say -

I also finished cutting out all the pieces for Marissa's Dinner Plate Dahlia.
This is the third one of these, and I'm getting faster at it now. It "only" took 9 hours and 40 minutes of cutting to produce this ready-to-go box!

This colorway is a modified kit. It's the Kaffe Fassett choice, but when I was ironing the fabrics after washing them a couple months ago, all the high-contrast dots-Dots-DOTS everywhere kept triggering migraines. Marissa is susceptible to migraines, too, so it didn't take much to decide we wanted to switch out some of the components to get away from that!

Namely, these culprits, which both had a lot of play in the original kit, used as neutrals against the other very busy prints:

It didn't take too much to tone it down enough to stop triggering migraines. Just two background switch-outs and the big purple arches - all of which are replaced with tamer Kaffe fabrics, so it's still a straight-up Kaffe Fassett Dinner Plate Dahlia.  :)

BOMs Away - From the Heart block 9

Welcome to the link-up for BOMs Away Mondays!
Where we share what we're doing on a BOM-type project
so they don't stall out in UFO-land!
(Linky at the bottom.)

Hello, there.  :)

I can share my finished block 9 for my "From the Heart" BOM:

Now I have some pieced blocks to make before this can be assembled.

And

Did you see that I shared the fully assembled Dinner Plate Dahlia for Devon's colorway?

80 x 80 in.
I like the Judy Niemeyer Technique-of-the-Month patterns, as I usually learn one (if not several) new techniques. I'll be an old hat at the tricks this quilt pattern held by the time I'm finished with #3 and #4!

Hey, I'm going to put another call-out for TGIFF here -

Do you have a finish that's almost ready? Would you like to host a TGIFF link-up at your blog? (We can supply linking code, so you don't need your own subscription for that.)

Dates available are August 23, September 13, and December 6 and 20.
The sign up sheet is at This Link.

BOMs Away - From the Heart

Welcome to the link-up for BOMs Away Mondays!
Where we share what we're doing on a BOM-type project
so they don't stall out in UFO-land!
(Linky at the bottom.)

I finished piecing Devon's Dinner Plate Dahlia, but I'm going to save that for a future time to share.

Tonight, after many weeks, I pulled out the final applique block for my From the Heart BOM and worked on wings while we finished the latest season of Stranger Things:

I haven't done any of my evening handstitching since May. I've been burying my empty-nest blues in pointless phone games during the shows. I was finally finished with having nothing to show for my sit-down time, so it was nice to get back into this work again!

P.S. - We have two openings in the next weeks for someone to host TGIFF on their blog. If you have a finish coming up (project completely finished, or a big stage finished, such as a complicated top or demanding set of blocks), this would be a fun way for you to share it and to have a day where people link up on your blog.
**You do not have to own a link-up subscription, as we managers can provide code for you to use.

If you'd like to host a TGIFF Blog link-up for finishes, you can sign up at this link: TGIFF Hosting SignUps

Welcome to the link-up for BOMs Away Mondays!

(Linky at the bottom.)

Happy Mother's Day to those of us in the U.S.!  :)

This week I finished the hand applique for Block 7 of my "From the Heart" project

And Navarre approves.

I also got these unit sets paper pieced for Devon's Dinner Plate Dahlia:

BOMs Away - From the Heart

Welcome to the link-up for BOMs Away Mondays!
Where we share what we're doing on a BOM-type project
so they don't stall out in UFO-land!
(Linky at the bottom.)

Hi, there! This week has been all about customer work, so the only BOM work I've accomplished is a little more work on my current evening TV-time hand applique project, on Block 7 of From the Heart:

I think this one's super cute, now that it's getting closer to being finished.  :)

BOMs Away - Another Variety Show

Welcome to the link-up for BOMs Away Mondays!
Where we share what we're doing on a BOM-type project
so they don't stall out in UFO-land!
(Linky at the bottom.)

Check it out - it's only the first week of the month, and I already worked on my OMG. That's a rare happening! I finished the piecing of the second mini-of-the-month that Scott asked for last year.

This is "Raven's Throne," designed by Marie Noah, and I got it in a kit from Northern Threads.
I don't like the stiffness of laser-cut fusible kits, but you can't beat the ease, eh?

I also finished the hand work on Block 6 for From the Heart (designed by Arlene Stamper and Melissa Harris). There are only two applique blocks remaining. Yay!

And I got all of Devon's Dinner Plate Dahlia Technique-of-the-Month cut out (a Judy Niemeyer pattern). It takes almost 11 hours. (The cutting, not the quilt-making.)

I was able to do all this BOM work this past week, because I've have a low-to-moderate grade migraine for 7 days running. I can't do any work at my longarm, as the machine sound and vibration ramps up the migraine in just a couple of moments. Sometimes I can get away with a few moments at the domestic machine, but not many. I'm really hoping this brat goes away very, very soon!!!

~*~*~

Hopefully, you don't have any migraine issues! Did you do any BOM work this week?

BOMs Away - From the Heart (and April OMG)

Welcome to the link-up for BOMs Away Mondays!
Where we share what we're doing on a BOM-type project
so they don't stall out in UFO-land!
(Linky at the bottom.)

I finished block 5 for "From the Heart" -

Block 6 was already prepped and ready to go, but I had the lightbox out for something else, so I traced out the last two applique blocks for this quilt.

Normally I trace the pattern lightly with a pencil, but this project has a dark background that hides the pencil too much, so I'm using a non-gel pen on these. (Gel ink smears around too much as you're working these up.) Tracing onto a black background gets quite "inventive", but luckily that's a super rare occurence for me.  :)

I do the backbasting technique for 99.9% of my hand applique. Most of the remaining .1% is when I use Kay Buckley's Perfect Circles for making small or medium berries.

You can use this method for overlapping pieces, tiny pieces, and even intertwining pieces when you're practiced at it.

The only non-sewing prepwork you do is to trace the picture onto the back of the background fabric. That's it. (No templates to make! No glue to use! No glue to wash out later or to turn brown if you leave your project sitting for three years. . .  I really love this method.)

~*~

Can you believe it's April?! This is my last full month of Life as we currenly know it, with big changes coming to all of us as Heather graduates next month and then they move away.

Do you have big changes this spring, too?

I'm adding my April OMG here, because diving into taxes today is going to ruin my brain for remembering to make another post tomorrow. (We will owe this year, thus the late reckoning - anybody who had wanted to fraudulently claim our tax return this year was more than welcome to it).

Scott's choice of mini quilts got shoved to the wayside when we started remodeling the master suite last year. So this month, I want to get those back on the active slate. My one must-do goal is to finish his Raven's Throne, which was left in this state:
