TGIFF is Here! - Devon's Dinner Plate Dahlia is a Flimsy!!

This is a big-deal finish for me to be able to show, even though it's actually a half-way point. If you've ever made one of the more complicated Judy Niemeyer or Jacqueline DeJong quilts, you would know why!!

Many, many hours went into the cutting-out, alone, of this top, and many, many more into the paper piecing and assembly work. But here it is, Devon's "Dinner Plate Dahlia" in the colorway she wanted!

Devon just did a 109-mile bike event at Big Bear Lake in southern California:

This is a Judy Niemeyer paper piecing pattern. 

It has quite a few more spots than normal for her where you have to match intersections exactly. I did a good bit of unpicking and resewing, and I'm well pleased with the end result.

I both dread and look forward to the one I need to get to work on for Marissa. Each of our three girls will have one of these, and then I'm going to make the larger size for Scott & I to put on our king bed. Sometimes I self-commit to the most insane projects!!!!!

BOMs Away - Now We're Talkin'!

Don't you love it when you finally break through all the meticulous foundation work to the point where things start coming together "quickly"?!

This week I started the assembly process on Devon's Dinner Plate Dahlia. It's not actually a quick job, being all precise curved piecing, but it's so very satisfying!

I got this far, stacked in sets of 4:

It's kind of fun to me to work backward, contructing a quilt from the outer border to the center instead of assembling a center and adding the borders. I may just have this quilt top finished for next week's BOM!

BOMs Away - Petals and Spears and a Tip

This week's BOM harvest - 

24 petals paper pieced and 12 curved-9-patch spears:

And a tip for curved piecing that is glue prepped: Keep Sewer's Aid and a speck of felt-like cotton batting on hand so you can swip it down the needle between units. Works wonders at preventing skipped stitches. Also great when stitching/quilting through layers of fusible webbing.

Most of this weekend was "lost" to trimming overgrown chokeberry shrubs and cutting down dead trees (we've lost a bunch of Aspens to some strange tree disease that there's no treatment for  - very sad). 

But I did get these sets of pieces put together for Devon's Dahlia quilt:

OK, then! Everything should be back on normal schedule now! The "kids" are safely moved across the country, my sister's happily wedded, and I've been getting some vital feet-up resting time in this week.

Luckily, paper piecing is largely a sit down task. I got several sets of pieces made for Devon's Dinner Plate Dahlia - 

Just a few more sets remain, and I'll start assembling them.

BOMs Away - Hello! (Home from the cruise)

Boy, I'll tell you what - traveling really does a number on those of us with immune syndromes! Sorry to be late with this week's link up. It took me a full week to get myself back together after having an absolute blast on our 2-family cruise. I've only done tiny smidges of hand stitching BOM work in the past two weeks. I was having so much fun with family on our sea days, that I only accomplished this much work on my Octopuses Garden blocks:

This is as it should be.  :)

and after a week of being home, I only have this small set of pieces for Devon's Dahlias finished up for something to share:

But let me tell you - Caribbean cruises have the absolute BEST excursions you can go on.

We interacted with sea turtles and swam with and fed sting rays at Grand Cayman,

I had one turtle swinging alongside me for several minutes, just hanging together. *love*

This is Stingray City, a sandbar offshore where dozens and dozens of stingrays come see the people
Photo actually taken four years ago, but we went back to this excursion
because it was so great and we wanted to see Pat and his sister experience this.

We toured Roatan Island off of Honduras and snorkeled its coral reef (some of us scuba'd)

Note to self: 

I'd love to spend a week at the currently-inexpensive resort and dive center at Anthony's Key off of Roatan, right next to the ****coolest**** dolphin research center/habitat that I've ever seen. 

The dolphins could clearly leave the enclosure any time they wanted to jump out, and they open all the gates every two days, anyway (it's not walled from the ocean in the first place, simply large-bore rope-netted), so the only dolphins in the enclosure doing tricks for people and giving encounter rides are those that WANT to do it. That is why, even though the shows are not as fancy and choreographed as you'll find at Sea World, etc., this is the absolute coolest dolphin place I've ever seen.

Pretty amazing. We watched workers entertaining the newer volunteer dolphins that were still untrained with hula hoops, balls, and trick lessons if they wanted to do that, so that the dolphins who'd come often enough to have the training to interact with people could do their thing unimpeded.

. . .and we went spelunking along an underground river at the Riviera Maya on the Mexicn mainland from Cozumel - 

Rio Secreto is AMAZING

The astonishing thing is that eating like PIGGGGS the entire week long, I only gained 6 pounds once the travel edema worked its way out after being home two days. Which is good, since I've been extremely foolish with mopey eating the last 6 months and had 20 pounds I already wanted to start taking off.  So, why is it so very hard to take weight off while eating properly and exercising??!!  ha!

Hello! I can't believe we're at the last few days of April already! For us here, at 7215 ft above sea level, that means Spring is solidly here finally. We may still get some snow, but most days are warm enough for the windows to be open, even at night sometimes! I love it.  :)

BOMs Away - Another Variety Show

Check it out - it's only the first week of the month, and I already worked on my OMG. That's a rare happening! I finished the piecing of the second mini-of-the-month that Scott asked for last year.

This is "Raven's Throne," designed by Marie Noah, and I got it in a kit from Northern Threads.

I don't like the stiffness of laser-cut fusible kits, but you can't beat the ease, eh?

I also finished the hand work on Block 6 for From the Heart (designed by Arlene Stamper and Melissa Harris). There are only two applique blocks remaining. Yay!

And I got all of Devon's Dinner Plate Dahlia Technique-of-the-Month cut out (a Judy Niemeyer pattern). It takes almost 11 hours. (The cutting, not the quilt-making.)

I was able to do all this BOM work this past week, because I've have a low-to-moderate grade migraine for 7 days running. I can't do any work at my longarm, as the machine sound and vibration ramps up the migraine in just a couple of moments. Sometimes I can get away with a few moments at the domestic machine, but not many. I'm really hoping this brat goes away very, very soon!!!
