I love this photo! My mom passed in 2004, and we had never seen this photo before. Her sister found it this weekend in Grandma's memory book. Very fun to have.

I had some nice phone conversations with the daughters and a son-in-law who are in Florida, and our Colorado daughter came up to have luncheon here with me and to spend the rest of the day. 

We had a great time eating, chatting, and making more big ribbon bows for her wedding. I pulled out my fabric sample booklets for Kona, Pure Element, and Bella solids, and we took some time to choose what she likes for the backing of her Kaffe Fassett Dinner Plate Dahlia quilt. 

(Element in Grapefruit won out.)

Then we went up to my longarm room so she could choose which of my Flimsies she would like me to quilt up for her wedding quilt. I have something like 38 flimsies hanging in my Flimsy Closet in that room, which makes times like this really very fun!

I was surprised at what called to her, and never would have chosen it myself as what I though would be the best pick. My "Journey's End" flimsy, made from late-1800's reproduction fabrics is the one that spoke to her. 

I showed her which of the top's fabrics I believe I already have on hand for backing, and she likes that - but just in case I don't actually have it, she is drawn to the idea of a soft pinwale corduroy in the Turkey Red color. 

Lots of flimsies to hang back up! My long-hauler Covid energy level was zapped by that point, so I told her we'd leave them for me to reload into the closet the next day.

Going in that room made it unavoidable to spoil the surprise of her college graduation quilt. She'd seen the fabrics before the top was made, but not the quilt top itself. Her reaction of, "Oh! I *really* like this!" when she saw it at this point made my day. (Particularly since all that McTavishing background work is time consuming and very demanding on my energy capabilities!)

So! On to the scheduled reason for this post - BOMs Away!

 I went back to my unfinished Month 6 applique blocks for "Harmony." These are big blocks - at least 16 inches finished. They have all been stitched down to this point now: 

And are ready for the next round at the sewing machine:

One more flower center and 6 more small leaves get put onto these blocks before they're finished. About 1/4 of those remaining pieces have been prepped. I believe these applique blocks can be all wrapped up next weekend.  :)

BOMs Away - Flimsy Report: Classic Nutcrackers!! ~and~ Marissa's Kaffe Fassett Dahlia

I did the last bit of hand work on a couple fellas 

(broom and ladder overlap. . .gold watch chain stitching)

and. . . BAM!!

My Classic Nutcrackers (by Sue Garman) is now a quilt top! 

Can you believe it?? I'm so excited. :) I love this quilt so much.

This is 55 x 66 inches. The pattern includes pieced blocks intended as an option for more border work, but I want this as a wall quilt, and it would be too large that way.

I am so very excited to reach this stage. I've been working on these guys since January 2019. They sure did make for some nice slow-stitching time in the evenings. It's all done using the back-basting needle-turn applique technique, all stitched by hand. 

So! With that much work in this baby, I'll be sharing it at the next TGIFF link-up.  :)

I never did share the finished top of Marissa's Kaffe Fasset Dinner Plate Dahlia (Judy Niemeyer pattern)!  It's been done for about 2-1/2 weeks, waiting for someone to be around to hold it up during good-enough lighting. This is 80 x 80 inches.

She really likes it, and when it's closer to its turn at the longarm, we'll go shopping together to find what she wants for the backing. First, though, I have to quilt Heather's Graduation Dahlia, my Nutcrackers, and Devon's Mandalla Dahlia.

BOMs Away - Surfer's Point, Dahlias, and Deer :)

This weekend I had fun pulling another quilt kit out to slip into my BOM rotation:

It's all washed, ironed, and cut out - ready to go. I hope to make two blocks per month. One day, it will grow up to be like this, 88x88 inches:

My weekday sewing was spent working on the assembly of Marissa's Dinner Plate Dahlia. . . 

. . . and working on more paper piecing for mine. I finished the last of the border sections:

It was a total deer week. We get both stags and doe herds of mule deer that like to rest on various knolls around our property - can you spot the four mature does resting on this one?

They also like to eat at various spots, like the bird feeder station . . .

and the elderberry bushes all over the place, including on the patio in the background of my sewing station shot up above.

Yesterday, this sweetheart's mother let her come right up to the patio door to check out what I was doing. Isn't she fantastic? Can you see her faint spots that haven't gone completely away yet?

I really *love* their visits!@

BOMs Away - Swan Song

Wow! What a productive week.

All the remaining section sets for Marissa's Dahlia were finished:

2/3 of the border sections for our king-sized Dahlia were finished:

And, this weekend I got the first three swan blocks sewn together:

Those three swans took SEVEN AND A HALF HOURS of work!

I do really love them, though. And I'm glad I don't have to give them attention again until October. . . heh!

It's official, also - I greatly prefer paper piecing to the multi-layered stitch-and-flip technique in these patterns. It's easier to be perfectly accurate, and also uses significantly less fabric.

BOMs Away - Scott's Wildlife Mini #3, Marissa's Dahlia, and the concept of ours

This was a good BOM week for me. I made the base for the third of Scott's Wildlife mini quilts that he requested. This will get trees, grass, little birds, and a mother bear with her cub after I do the background quilting. (Which has to wait until my machine gets serviced.)

I paper pieced several of the unit sets for Marissa's Dinner Plate Dahlia:

And I made my final decision on which coloration I wanted to use for the king-sized Dahlia for Scott and my bed. 

I played around in Quiltster a lot to come up with this one. The first three Dinner Plate Dahlia tops you've seen me working on were colorways that were already designed by different sponsoring shops. This one is colored to go perfectly with our room. I'll be pulling from stash and store purchases, which isn't as daunting now that I've put together two tops already and am working on the third. I'm getting pretty intimately acquainted with how things mesh together and a good idea of how the colors get affected by the others. Still, hopefully it'll come out the way I envision it!!

BOMs Away Monday

Wow! It's been quite a long time since I've done any "normal" patchwork piecing. 

Putting together the patchwork blocks for my "From the Heart" was kind of fun for a change:

I also finished cutting out all the pieces for Marissa's Dinner Plate Dahlia.

This is the third one of these, and I'm getting faster at it now. It "only" took 9 hours and 40 minutes of cutting to produce this ready-to-go box!

This colorway is a modified kit. It's the Kaffe Fassett choice, but when I was ironing the fabrics after washing them a couple months ago, all the high-contrast dots-Dots-DOTS everywhere kept triggering migraines. Marissa is susceptible to migraines, too, so it didn't take much to decide we wanted to switch out some of the components to get away from that! 

Namely, these culprits, which both had a lot of play in the original kit, used as neutrals against the other very busy prints:

It didn't take too much to tone it down enough to stop triggering migraines. Just two background switch-outs and the big purple arches - all of which are replaced with tamer Kaffe fabrics, so it's still a straight-up Kaffe Fassett Dinner Plate Dahlia.  :)
