Flimsy Alert: A Barbeque with the Squadron

Sunday is my BOM work day, and this past week I got one of my old ones all the way assembled into a top ready to be quilted! 

After we finished the long drive circuiting the Denver metro area to take one kiddo to her college and the other to the airport (lengthened by freezing rain and snow), it was nice to work up the last seams for a great flimsy finish.

 

 
 
This baby's 79 x 90, and I'm thinking I'll change its name from the "Selvages" that it came with to "A Barbeque with the Squadron."  It's got an Americana color scheme going, and the alternate blocks keep making me think of little picnic blankets. . .  besides, there's not a selvage on the thing!  Oops - except we're looking at it upside down.

 

 
 
Now the baskets are sitting the right way. Although Scott says those basket blocks look like a big fish chomping down a bunch of little fish...  ;D   

This is the first quilt that Boo Girl has had a hard time staying off of - guess she likes these colors!

Our two older girls are home from college very briefly - Heather had an interview in Denver, so we got to see her!  So I'm going to go "play" with them now, but  I wanted to get BOMs Away up for our front hemisphere friends.

I'll do that last seam and add the red side borders this evening after we drop Devon back at her school and Heather at the airport to return to hers.

BOMs Away - Sep 16 - Selvages & getting over myself

So, this week I pulled out Selvages, which has been tucked in a box waiting forever for a BOM week to open up. The blocks were all made, just needed to be assembled.

 

 

 

 

Oh. And waiting forever because the fabric that came with the kit to assemble it with - I. Didn't. Like.    At all.  I *did* really like a particular duo of fabrics in my stash for an Americana pop of color. But there was not enough of either. And have you ever tried to find just that particular shade of blue? Blue can be amazingly bratty to match. I mean - it's just blue, right??  ;D

You can just see that the replacement blue is a wee bit brighter.

 

I finally settled on a duo one time in a store after about a year's worth of shopping (and this is when I still actively shopped at least once a month). They weren't exactly what I was looking for, but they seemed to sort of work in about the way I'd imagined. Washed them, ironed them, got ready to cut all those setting triangles, and - I just didn't want to compromise. I wanted exactly what I wanted.

 

Well, that was a good two years ago. Today, when I opened its box, I had a major "Oooohhh, YEAH." moment.   But then I told me to Get Over Yourself already. Quit being such a spoiled brat and use these pieces. Besides - Finished trumps Perfect since it's not a multi-thousand-dollar show competitor. Seriously!

 

So I ironed the fabrics and cut out those setting triangles and border strips.

 

 

 

Used my Design Hall  (hehe - see what I did there?)   ;D

 

 

And two columns are assembled. My family wants to go out to a movie in a few minutes, so that's all the BOM sewing there's time for today. Hoping to get all the rest of this one's assembly finished next month.

 

And you know what?  I really like this fabric combo!

Well, it's been a really rough run for us this week. The only BOM work I got done happened because I'd already made all the inside 9-patches for the alternate blocks for this project. I did get them all assembled into their block form, with a few extra 9-patch minis for use on the back or something.

Hello again!

Are you working on your BOMs?  It’s a busy, busy time of year – a time when this linky party serves me well, or I’d let all my BOMs float by the wayside instead of just half of them.  ;D

I held this block up for Scott on Friday night after work, and he perked up and said, “Galdalf!”  Totally worth caving in for  the “There and Back Again” project. What I *am* being good about is ONLY using fabs from my stash.

BOMs AWAY Monday 10 - and a HST tip

Well, I suppose it's a good thing I started BOM's AWAY Mondays, because otherwise I'd ignore all my BOMs again this week. I'm just so sick of them still and would rather only work on more UFO finishes.  

However! I got back on schedule with the first 4 July BOMs.

First I did my Swap Adventure block for Sandi in Oklahoma. I loved this one!

Next I did the two BOMs that are already cut out: 

Selvages:

Wild Rose Cottage (my favorite of the pieced BOMs right now)

And last I did the July block in triplicate for my local guild's BOM project. (One block for my 2011 quilt, one for turning in for the monthly drawing, and one for a Quilt of Valor.)

Siggy for July (spun around by Blogger) I think I'll quilt Hancock's sig in it.  :D

But I do have to say that this is my all-time favorite way to make HST's:

Don't need a whole sheet's worth? Just cut off a row and do that many:

Cut apart on the solid lines, fold, peel the paper, press open.  Lots of HST's in a fraction of the time.   :D    (I get great results with plain printer paper - recycled previous printouts, even - using a slighter tighter tension and smaller stitches.)

BOMs AWAY Monday #3

This past week I got three of the BOM projects on my list caught up.  :D

My favorite of all 9 is my Wild Rose Cottage project, a Marti Mitchell Patchwork Party quilt. Something about the cheery colors just makes me happy. And the blocks are intricate and interesting. Besides all that, I had already cut out all the pieces during a movie long ago! Can't remember the name of the first one, but the second is "Mexicali Rose" - apropos for May, no?  :)














The Glacier Star Project got the April portions added on (the spiny feathers at the bottoms). . . 

. . . and then the May portions. (There are eight diamond sections.)

And while I was in the paper foundation groove, I finished the GIGANTIC parts of our guild's opportunity quilt that Sandra sent home with me. That's a 12 oz. glass!

And I got the Selvages project up to date. I have no idea why they named this quilt "Selvages." You don't use any. But you do make two of each 9" block each month.

Oh!  And for your entertainment - I found this really super cool spider in the back yard today!!

It's about 1/2" diameter, and has a shiny hard-looking shell.
(No, I was not going to touch it to find out!!)
I just found out it's called a Spinybacked Orbweaver and does not have a dangerous bite.
Pretty little bright yellow fella. I guess it can stay. (Eat lots of mosquitoes while you're hanging around!!)

Fun Mail!! And a bit of stitch therapy :)

So, I went through last night's mail, and I got a packet from Oklahoma!! 



Not only did Elizabeth make me a GORGEOUS Mother's Dream block, but she also sent me a hexie flower! I've been drooling over several people's hexie projects in blog land, but can't start any of my own until more UFOs are squared away, so it was especially nice to find this little friend.  :)

It's beautifully sewn, too - such tiny stitches!

 

I did get one more UFO BOM sewn today from the Selvages set. (Another that's been cut out for months!)

And. . . I played with some scraps and made some notecards like the ones I'd seen at Teaginny's tutorial. So much fun and a great way to use those little scraps that are just not big enough, really, for much else.  Thanks, Teaginny!
