~*~ Finish Report ~*~ "Fall All Around"

I'm really in love with this finish, and it's so nice to have a post for TGIFF!

Scott helped me catch some shots a bit ago with the early morning frost still on the hills behind us. 

"Fall All Around" is the Quilting By The Bay version of the 2011 Patchwork Party quilt, but my kit remained untouched until this year. 

This was one of my "17 in 2017" list items. It finished at 86 x 96", and I used the Hobbs Tuscany washable wool, which I pre-shrank as my fabrics were all pre-washed.

The only change I made was to round off the cream corners when I added the final border, and I just placed the feature blocks however they wanted instead of paying attention to how they were arranged on the original rendition.

I am a stickler for details, so a backing made from the pretty plaid in the collection would not have made me happy unless I matched up all the cross lines when I pieced it. That wasn't something I felt like doing at the time, so I made a central strip using left-overs from my 1/4 yard bundle. (The yardage I used does not have a brown read, like the camera sees outside, but a very green read like the detail shot a couple photos down.)

This was the 6th quilt on my longarm machine. I used a gold Glide thread, size 40, which has a really nice sheen that approaches a metallic gleam in this tone. The sheen of Glide is not my personal favorite in thread (being a cotton, tiny-weight lover), but it went very nicely with this quilt.

I used the Urban Elementz pantograph, "Utopia - petite," and really like that one. I'm sure it will be a staple for fall quilts, or garden-y ones with its pretty scroll-tipped leaves. It's moderately dense work-wise - took 14 1/2 Magna Glide bobbins (L size) for this quilt. You can see how it played out for a confident beginner:

By the way, the fabric collection in this quilt is "Bittersweet" by Nancy Halvorsen, put out by Benartex. It is absolutely gorgeous in real life, with a glow in the prints that totally captures that magical look of fall colors in a pretty afternoon sunlight. It's not metallic or anything, just has phenomenal magic of color play. I have enough fabric left to make pillowcases, but I need to figure the math for making that kind in a king size.

Feelin' some early Fall All Around - ~Flimsy Alert!~

Whoopin' it up two weeks in a row!!  Whoop! Whoop!

Who knows why the purples are coming out far more blue than real.

Here it is, my 2011 Patchwork Party BOM project finished into a complete top!
Coming in big at 86 x 98 inches.

This BOM got put together in record time - I started working on it just this March.

You want to hear something funny? This quilt top and last week's quilt top were both designed by the same person! 

I bought that Set Sail kit inside the shop in Florida a good eight or nine years ago (Quilting by the Bay - which is a really great online store, but if you're ever in Panama City, you need to visit the shop, as it's really wonderful). I bought this Patchwork Party kit online in 2011 - the blocks in the center were each created and sold by different quilt shops online, and each shop presented a different finishing pattern. The one I chose happened to be put up by that same Florida shop. And now, after the blue one was worked on sporadically since 2013 and this one finally got pulled out of untouched-storage, they both came up to be finished tops together without any realization that they're both Sandy Perdue designs (with Sue Elliott on this one). 

I just find that highly entertaining.

Getting to this stage for this quilt scores me one of my 17 in 2017 projects, and the way our nights have been cooling off lately, it's going to fit the mood perfectly very, very soon. Good thing it's my next longarm quilt~! I have a great leaf panto that will be just the thing for this. I'm looking forward to using that great sashing to practice a way to square a quilt top up as you go with the floating approach to loading quilts.

Whee! This quilt gets more gorgeous with each step of progress! The fabrics have no metallic highlights, but they just glow in real life, and the interplay between the different colors is so very pretty inside that pretty burgundy sashing. Got the center all put together before the weekend hit:

I'll give the borders (with all those leaves) some finishing attention on Thursday/Friday. Looking forward to that, for sure.

So. . .since "Fall All Around" is coming off the BOM rotation (as well as Star Crazy), I fell victim to the draw of Kevin's "Sapphire Stars" scrappy mystery.

He just put the second clue out, which I saw right after we had a sorting party here to get the latest mountain of scraps tucked into the appropriate color bins. So, there I was, having just stated that I definitely had to start doing something with the blue scraps, because that bin was bursting-full, and admiring several bloggers' scrappy finishes this week, when I happened on the mystery. Quite serendipitous, actually.

So yesterday I cut and cut and cut individual pieces from my scraps, and today I sewed the 48 blue squares for Clue 1 (yielding me 96 bonus HSTs), as well as the 48 short 3-strip sets and the 22 long 6-strip sets for Clue 2:

(That green is the back of a quilt that I have to attach binding to tomorrow before sewing up another backing for the next longarm session.)

I will have no trouble finding everything I'll need from my scrap bins (these hold everything that ranges from crumb size to about 1/8 yd), except the little yardage of the gray that he lists as the only constant fabric. That'll be easy to get from my regular stash, so no purchases necessary at all for this one. Completely love that!

Hi, everybody. I'm really sorry I wasn't able to post last week. I hope you were able to link up through Kate's blog. 

We had to go to a family funeral over in Nebraska. Helen lived a long, full life, just over 91 years, but she's left a hole for many of us. Now that I have my computer back from the shop, I'll have to make a post for her later in the week.

For BOM work, today I did a good batch of work for Fall All Around:

Two main blocks: Coat of Arms, 

and Herald Square,

as well as 14 more border leaves (they come in sets of two per color):

Hopefully, I'll get back my mojo soon for working on
that Wind in the Whiskers quilt!!

Also, the applique work for Octopus Garden block 2 is finished now!

I'm waiting until all the blocks are made to start a second round for the embroidery that gets added in. Been getting a little tired of looking at this project every evening for stitching time, so I'll be prepping the next Mexico Fiesta block as soon as I get a chance. It works way better for me when I can alternate between this project and that one from day to day.  *Love* my peaceful hand stitching time, but the lengthy nature of the projects get me feeling restless about them fairly easily.

. . .and tons more prep work for future blocks (twice again of what is shown above). All the HSTs are sewn and cut, and all the stem patches are sewn. I'll enjoy some unusual daytime television viewing while trimming and pressing these patches to put the box away for next time.

And - WOW - Don't you just love the Wonder Woman movie???  :D  Scott and I finally got to see it today, and we both enjoyed it more than we've enjoyed one for a while.

BOMs Away - Fresh Start: Fall All Around

New BOM on my rotation! Well, it's new in the workload, anyway. I actually bought it back in 2011. Had an empty week on my BOM calendar, so this week I pulled a NETY out of the storage room, washed and ironed the pieces from all the block kits, and got all the blocks cut out for future ease:

I also washed the fabrics from the finishing kit I got for it (these Patchwork Parties are done by 12 different quilt shops, and each one works up a finished quilt, so you have lots of end designs to choose from for yours). Still have to iron those and kit that part up. Gimme 2 or 3 weeks to get there. ;D

Today I sewed up the first two blocks:

And Turley's Inn

Those two had to be right up front, because one set of the pieces for Garden Tea were a smidge narrow, and I couldn't forget about that, and my Dad's cousin (or ultra good family friend?) is named Tony Turley. He was tickled when I posted a pic on his Facebook page.

Hope this week is good to you all. Let's also hope my auto mechanic gets the driveshaft for my car that the factory had promised he would have by Feb 24th. . .  (going on 5 weeks without wheels is driving me nuts!)
