Got this second Affairs of the Heart block finished before the INSANITY started.

TGIFF Flimsy Alert! - Quiet Rebellion on the Pond

One last UFO significantly advanced on its way to being completely shot down!

"Quiet Rebellion on the Pond" is now a full-fledged flimsy.

All those geese tried mighty hard to fly away!

I know *exactly* how I want to quilt this, but I don't have the capacity at the moment. Hopefully I can get it on a longarmer's wait list soon.  :)

Considering we had to sell a home and then moved across the country, I'm feeling really great about how many large-quilt projects were brought to flimsy stage before my semester started up.

Tomorrow just after 11am, this flimsy's photo op site will be the northern boundary of my neighborhood!!

And today, Scott and I have been married for 23 years!!!!! We didn't even realize it is our anniversary until we were halfway to the interstate to take Devon's stuff back up to school (90 minutes away). We high-5'd each other across the truck, figuring a new home was a most excellent anniversary gift!

So Devi is now happily ensconced in Buckingham Palace . . .

er . . . Hall.

With this beauty right outside her building.

And doing exciting things already, like driving a ZAMBONI!  How cool is that?! (She's working at the university's ice rink this year.)

WIP - a NewFO: Kashmir

So. . . I finished the quilt top on my last WIP post (pics Friday). Onward!

Can't get to any more UFO's, as they're stuck in Deep Storage for at least the next 10 days. Can't wait that long to get going with something, especially with the kids all disappearing again this week!

Plus, Monday was my birthday (woohoo!) and the quilt shop has a great birthday incentive. . . So. . .

Here is my August NewFO: a Jinny Beyer quilt kit that positively GLOWS in real life.

Kashmir:

Papers printed and prepped (I left the extra bit untrimmed on the one set so I'd be able to tell the different at a glance), templates made.

Mostly cut out! (but not the fussy-cutting border print, which I just cannot tackle having only a low coffee table to cut on right now)

Even organized already in a cute boot box.  :)

And. . . . .  The next set of Jane fabs is ready to go!

But SADLY (although most importantly), the next semester in my quest for a Masters in History is now officially a WIP. This week's work is:

 and

This is my last semester of regular courses - I'll be starting my thesis in January. >Whoa<

BOMs AWAY - 20 August 2012 - Affairs of the Heart

Welcome to my Link-Up for BOMs Away Mondays!

(We'd love to see the BOM you're working on lately.)

I had a good time Saturday morning on my first visit to a quilt guild in our new area. Can you believe the meeting place was an entire 1.1 mile away from the house we're closing on this coming Friday? And everyone was super friendly. Very cool!

I finished the first block for "Affairs of the Heart" - except that I don't have the right thread to stitch in the little curly cues at the corners. Going out the door as soon as this posts to pick something up.  ;D

Evening addendum: Got the swirlies stitched. I'm assuming my embroidery finesse will develop over the course of this project. ;D

Whoop! Whoop! It's TGIFF for both Dragonfly Party flimsies

Whoop! Whoop!

Last weekend I finished the second Dragonfly Party top. My daughter said "In the apartment GYM???" when I asked her to come help me get the two of them photoed.

And why not? It's pretty in there and quite apropos, as finishing these two tops straight through gave my Quilt ADD quite the workout - and those 1/4" sashings gave my fingers a workout as well!

WIP - Changing Gears

I'm happy, because this week I get some new colors to work with!  It's nice that I got both Dragonflies fully assembled, and their backs made, but I normally can't stand working with the same colors for that many weeks in a row. Apartment limbo forces changes on my modus operandi, though.

Oh! I also finished the Hawaiian aplique stage of that mini quilt. Unfortunately, all my batting is too far back in storage, and I'll have to wait until we're in the house to move this one forward.

Here is the last UFO project that escaped Deep Storage: "Quiet Rebellion on the Pond."  I named it thus because when I was participating in my old guild's December 2010 block exchange, the layout I liked best broke the rules of how we were supposed to use the required colors. So I made a double set of blocks - one to turn in (that followed the rules) and one the way I liked them. Too bad my phone is taking such pitiful shots today. The colors are much nicer in real life.

Got its box opened and hung the center up.

Printed out the game plan (I'd designed this one in my EQ).

Cut the remaining "yardage" borders.

Went ahead and cut the binding while that fabric was out - LOVE how well it used up the piece, with only these triangles to put in the scrap bin!

Cut lots of squares for the flying geese border - 108 of those white suckers! (I'll use the 4-at-once method.)

And remembered to save some good selvage cuts for my future plans:

Today I will tackle the 108 flying geese that I need for that border!

BOMs AWAY - 12 Aug 2012 - Dragonflies, a laugh, and a tip or two

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEib6FEw-InTZOIaLrsh7raXFspj2e1T12kCO8l-1fE90gdy6n4l1MW2uvunLaRnasRzTevZmJGQUxFSneppP1tAy6D3038PFUnZoe3kZkA6pv4O9beBUFKk-l_8VIx2zK7QOjm3Pv7Ki7I/s1600/BOM+Button.jpg

Welcome to my Link-Up for BOMs Away Mondays!

(We'd love to see the BOM you're working on lately.)

Hi there! Well, I got the second Dragonfly Party BOM all assembled! Pretty exciting.

Just have to put the backs together and they'll be ready to fly off to the longarmers'. (They're wait-listed, so don't hold your breath.)

Didn't have time to take fancier pictures, because the family wanted to head out the door to go hike up the Helen Hunt Falls trail. Lots of families out there today, as it was gorgeous weather.

Scott and I on the lower portion

Love this shot of Heather

Devon, Scott, Me, and Heather
- just missing Marissa, who's already away at school

But back to quilting.  ;D

Have you seen this cartoon? It really made me laugh. My poor hubby can understand the sentiment.

And. . . a couple of tips!

#1 - When your flimsies are awaiting quilting time, the best storage is on a pants hanger in your closet instead of stuffed in a box. Very convenient, and you even see them once in a while so they're not completely out of mind.

#2 - For sewing insanely tiny sashings, like the Dragonfly Party's 1/4" sashes, I found ample pinning to be essential at keeping things lined up. The slightest wobbles show terribly when the sewing lines are so close together. When you're on the second sash seam, pin parallel rather than perpendicular. Does a much better job, and you can use each pin as a tiny Purple Thang, dragging it out and along as you SLOWLY sew the seam. Lots of pins and little speed are the two crucial keys to getting a super skinny sashing or border to come out looking fabulous instead of nightmarish.

Now that the Dragonflies are squared away and Jane is all caught up, this week's BOM work will focus on my barely-started "Affairs of the Heart" project.

The Month 1 blocks

Which will one day grow up to look like this:

BOMs Away - 5 August 2012 - Transitioning Again

Welcome to my Link-Up for BOMs Away Mondays!

(We'd love to see the BOM you're working on lately.)

It's a sad day, because our youngest just flew off to her school-year location and our home starts its diminishing process to the empty-nest stage in the next three weeks. This was her first solo flight, and she did just great. Her fur-bud will miss her!

On the other hand, it was a terrific BOM week. I finished assembling the first of the twin "Dragonfly Party" quilts! (blogged more fully on the last post)  I'll be trying to get the other one finished to flimsy state by next week's report.

Even though most of my attention was focused on that old BOM project, I did do up a handful of Baby Janes:

It's loads of fun seeing the blocks start to infiltrate the lower half of my progress chart on the sidebar! I'm just about caught up to the monthly deliveries, which is really exciting to me.  ;D
